23. Architectural Landscapes, Seligman, Arizona
Seligman, Arizona, boasts a string of colorfully eclectic buildings. After experiencing the wacky Delgallio’s Snow Cap Drive-In, I tramped up and down this short stretch of Historic Route 66, capturing images of neighboring historic and photogenic buildings. The Copper Cart Restaurant served in 1987 as the venue for the first meeting convened by Angel Delgadillo of concerned citizens that led to the founding of the Arizona Route 66 Association. Today the location of the former restaurant houses the Route 66 Motorporium.
The Seligman Sundries and the Rusty Bolt Souvenir and Gift Shop stood just down the street.
Back near the Historic Route Motel, in fact at the other end of the same parking lot, is the Roadkill Cafe.
Nearby an eye-catching line of faux Old West Frontier store fronts along with a huge wooden still and an authentic 1860 Arizona Territorial Jail.
Just down the road is the General Store, complete with a statue of a bison in front. I loved the lighting the setting sun provided at the time for this set of images.
The last hour or so of my evening I spent out in the wind and cold and across the street from the Supai Motel with my camera and tripod trying to capture the best image I could of this renovated 15-unit, 1952-era motel and especially of its restored Googie-style neon sign.
….
When the sky turned black, exhausted from a very full day, we went back to our motel and turned in for the night.
