My life is composed of several chapters, which in aggregate inform my writing and photography. To name a few of these chapters, I’ve served in the Coast Guard Reserve, graduated from a merchant marine academy with a deck officer’s license, volunteered as a licensed skipper of a Sea Scout/Explorer ship (=troop), and earned a Ph.D. in Anthropology. In the process, I have studied Russian in the Soviet Union, sailed aboard a Coast Guard ice-breaking cutter in the Great Lakes, explored many Asian ports on a voyage aboard a merchant marine cargo vessel, scoured through 27-linear feet of unpublished documents in an archive and produced an ethnohistorical work on a Native American village in Alaska, lived and conducted research in Korea, published a book on my Korean fieldwork, taught as a professor in anthropology and international studies at a university, and run my own tutoring business. My exploits have involved many exciting experiences at home and abroad, and many I have shared with my husband, Bill, my wonderful partner on my journey through most of my adult life. I wish I could say I recorded all these in journals and with a camera. But I’ve turned the page, and as my husband and I continue to take road trips, I hope to record and share more of my travels in this chapter of my life.
